Lavrov praised the “useful” November 28 discussions between Vladimir Putin and Viktor Orbán, calling both leaders pragmatic actors focused on national interests.

Lavrov highlighted that all bilateral cooperation mechanisms continue to function smoothly, with particular emphasis on expanding trade despite what he described as “illegal Western sanctions” led by the European Commission. A major focal point of the meeting was the Paks II nuclear power project, which Russia says is progressing successfully and remains the flagship of Moscow-Budapest energy cooperation.

The Russian minister also underscored growing collaboration in electricity, culture, humanitarian ties, and sports, noting joint efforts to resist what he called politically motivated restrictions on athletes. On international issues, Lavrov reaffirmed that both Russia and Hungary prioritise building a “reliable security architecture in Europe” and stressed the need to return to principles of equality, mutual respect, and indivisible security.

Lavrov said both sides share concerns over the protection of national minorities in Ukraine, calling it an essential component of any future settlement. He added that Russia is ready to brief Hungary on new developments since the recent Putin–Orbán meeting. With Budapest often breaking ranks with the EU on Russia policy, the meeting underscores Hungary’s unique role inside the bloc and Moscow’s continued push for alternative European partnerships.

#Russia #Hungary #Lavrov #Szijjarto
